Punta Cana Couples and Adults-Only Resorts Punta Cana adults-only hotels require all guests be 18 years old, a policy intended to foster a grown-up atmosphere for couples and honeymooners wanting a resort without children. A hotel filled with couples may make single travelers feel isolated depending on their hotel's variety of activities and the friendliness of fellow guests. Upgrading to a deluxe suite adds these exclusive touches: private butler check-in, luggage packing and unpacking, breakfast in bed and private transport around the hotel. The dining experience is just as impressive. The resort buffet is anything but bland, offering eye-opening items like lobster, crab legs, clams, oysters, stone crab claws, grilled grouper, snapper, tuna, grilled lamb chops and rib eye steak during a week’s stay. The four specialty restaurants--steakhouse and French, Japanese and Italian cuisine—are a definite try but some guests prefer the buffet. Premium wine, beer and liquor are available at meals and hotel and beach bars. A smorgasbord of scheduled activities make it easy to work up an appetite. Choose from tai chi, spinning, target shooting, archery, dance classes, darts, aerobics, ping-pong and tennis. Watersports activities feature sailing lessons, catamaran sailing, snorkeling and a scuba lesson in the pool. Grand Bavaro guests also have access to the facilities at other area Iberostar hotels, including the 18-hole P.B. Dye designed course at the Iberostar Bavaro Golf resort. A 7-day stay at the Iberostar Grand earns two golfing days, with equipment costing extra. For wedding planning, the staff not only knows the event routine well, it has experience to navigate the Dominican marriage license requirements, something no couple should attempt from back home. The 456-room colonial-style all-suites resort features king beds and the exceptional bath facilities including a jetted whirlpool bathtub and separate shower. Given a choice of terrace or balcony room, consider those with a large balcony: they may come with private exterior Hydro Spa pool. Additional room features are mini-bar with beer, in-room premium liquor & wine selection, free internet and 24-hour room service. Upgrading to the Excellence Club includes private lounge, private beach and more premium services. The hotel's location in a palm grove offers unusually beautiful surroundings as two large pools meander the grounds. Dining options are uncommonly generous: eight a-la-carte restaurants including Mediterranean and French. Excellence Punta Cana’s name is potentially misleading. It’s at Uvero Alto Beach, far north of the main shopping, restaurants and nightlife and almost an hour away from the airport. With its own spa, mini golf, tennis courts, fitness center, beauty salon, casino, scuba diving, horseback riding and fishing (some at extra charge), it is a self-contained resort community, precisely what most honeymooners and anyone seeking this kind of remote location expect. Barcelo Bavaro Beach Standard rooms come with choice of king bed or two doubles, minibar, coffee maker and wi-fi, an extra charge. Basic ocean front rooms come with a better view and slightly larger TV. The high-end Master Suite Ocean Front Club Premium is outfitted with two complete bathrooms, Jacuzzi and living room and free wi-fi. Watersports equipment provided for all on the beautiful beach includes kayaks, windsurfing board and snorkeling gear. Bavaro Beach guests have numerous ways to enjoy their vacation. They can use their own sizable pool, restaurants and theater for evening entertainment as well as visit additional pools and restaurants at the larger Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe, an adjoining sister property. Sports facilities shared by the two hotels are extensive: the on-site P.B. Dye Lakes Golf Course, tennis courts, multi-use sports courts, professional soccer field and semi-professional baseball field. The nearby Palace Deluxe also offers a casino and sports bar both open 24 hours, wellness center and spa. In the evening, the Palace Deluxe offers large Las Vegas-style shows in a two-level, 1,400-seat theater. Tram service makes it more convenient to visit the Palace Deluxe, whose own guests are not supposed to share facilities at the Bavaro Beach. This separation policy makes for a quieter atmosphere at the adults-only Bavaro Beach, something honeymooners appreciate. Hotel Riu Palace Macao Despite its name, the Riu Palace Macao is located on the excellent Arena Gorda Beach, which is extra wide and has calm shallow water perfect for swimming. If palm tree shade is scare, use the resort sun loungers or parasols provided by the pool. Guest rooms feature king or two beds, hydro-massage bathtub, shower and lounge area; a premium Jacuzzi suite also has a Jacuzzi on its balcony or terrace. Beach activities are abundant since the Macao is part of a Riu complex of resorts consisting of the Riu Palace Punta Cana, ClubHotel Punta Cana and Hotel Riu Naiboa. Combined sports options for guests include windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, body boards, snorkeling equipment and an introductory pool scuba lesson. The hotel’s main buffet serves all three meals with the added selection of themed restaurants for dinner. Evening entertainment has several options: the resort’s nightly show and the free admission to both the Riu complex casino and Pacha, one of the area's most popular nightclubs at Riu Naiboa. Hotel Riu Palace Macao has a strict age policy during the Spring Break period of March- April: at least one person 21 or over must occupy each room and the hotel reserves the option to eject anyone hotel staff or other guests complains about. The DR's minimum legal drinking age of 18 occasionally causes noisier hallways when students are on break.
