The origin of Junkanoois
unknown. According to legend the name came from John Canoe,
an African tribal chief who insisted on celebrating with his people even
after coming to the Bahamas as a slave. Christmas always
has been the Bahamas' big celebration time, and
Junkanoo became the highlight.
Junkanoo uses many different instruments including goat
skin drums. Flames are tightening the hide on these drums just
prior to the parade. |
