Many coastal walking trails skirt thick mangrove forests with their impenetrable interlocking root system. Found on the sheltered side of an island, mangrove forests provide an important nursery for many species of crab, shrimp and fish. They also seem to house great quantities of mosquitoes, most active early and late in the day. Mangrove leaves are thick and evergreen, and the trees vary tremendously in height from only several feet tall to 20 feet or more. |
