Time: 10-12 hours. Difficulty: 3. Trailhead: On the Scenic Road West is a pull-off for an overview of the north coast. The trail down begins here. It's not an obvious starting point.

As you'll notice from the overlook, the valley below is incredibly lush and green, a complete wilderness of nothing but treetops.

Along the trail you'll have options to visit many bays and coves, starting with Annaly Cove, then Annaly Bay, Annaly Notch, Willis Bay, Wells Bay and on to Davis Beach.

Or you can stick to the main Furnel Ridge path, which comes out on the Scenic Road West several miles farther east.

To really do this right, it's a strenuous hike, an all-day endeavor that requires 10 to 12 hours of occasionally steep ascents and descents.

And you start out with a very steep descent down to the coast, dropping over 600 feet in under a half-mile. Wear long pants, take plenty of water and snacks and start early.
