The Bahamas are meant to be enjoyed out of doors, during good weather, and that can be counted on only part of the year.

Remember, the Bahamas are located just east of Florida, which places them in the Atlantic Ocean and hundreds of miles north of the Caribbean. This is not a tropical or semi-tropical region. The passing Gulf Stream typically keeps temperatures in a fairly even range, from the 70's in winter to the 80's in summer.

In winter, the Bahamas are usually impacted by the same cold fronts that move into Florida where temperatures may drop well below average for days at a time and high winds may make it impossible for dive and snorkel boats to run their regular tours.

In extreme conditions, temperatures have dropped as low as 37 degrees in Freeport (only 50 miles from Florida) and in January, 1977, snow mixed with cold rain fell on Freeport. Even Nassau had some snow flurries.

Although the weather is likely to be just fine, from mid-December to April, high winds especially can make more for difficult conditions.

In the fall, the most active hurricane period typically is from
September 1 to November 1, which is why prices for hotels and Bahamas cruises sometimes are a bargain.
