Top 5
Punta Cana Luxury Resorts

The following resorts are rated 5-star, as most Punta Cana resorts claim to be. These five deserve the top rating.

Sivory Punta Cana

The Sivory Punta Cana boutique hotel illustrates not all the hotels here are giant complexes or all-inclusive. With just 55 suites, there is an optional all-inclusive plan perhaps worth considering the resort’s location Playa Uvero Alto, well north of the large shopping and restaurant areas of Bavaro.

However, the Sivory Punta Cana is ideal for those wanting a vacation on a beautiful secluded beach, personalized service, comfortable luxury suites and exceptional dining. The suites come in several sizes, junior suite to deluxe ocean suite on the water with small personal plunge pool and terrace. All suites regardless of size come with king bed, free Wi-Fi, mini bar, wine cooler and a bath with a two-person tub and double shower and much more.

In the morning, homemade bread and pastries, coffee and juice appear at the door, a breakfast prelude.  The resort’s infinity pool overlooking the ocean provides chaise lounges and valet service for a light menu and tropical drinks. The 4,300-square-foot Zen-like spa includes meditation gardens and individualized spa treatments, Jacuzzi, thermal pool and sauna.

Evening dining is a main highlight at the a-la-carte restaurants with international and Mediterranean cuisine. The Gourmond Restaurant and its 8,000-bottle wine cellar with over 200 vintages enjoy a AAA Four-Diamond rating as does the 10-table Asian-fusion restaurant, Tau. Cigars are important part of Dominican culture, so a separate cigar lounge with international brands is provided.

Sivory Punta Cana also has meeting facilities for up to 150. A meeting this size would probably block everyone else out, just as well for honeymooners.

Tortuga Bay Hotel

Tortuga Bay is what luxury is all about and it starts at the airport. A VIP escort takes you quickly  through customs, then transports you by private car to the hotel.  A personal concierge checks you at your villa and provides a golf cart for use throughout your stay. It’s a first glimpse of the impeccable service offered at Tortuga Bay Hotel, the DR’s only AAA 5-Star property.

Tortuga Bay Hotel is a small and private resort, only 13 beach villas—all designed by famed Oscar de la Renta—inside the huge Puntacana Resort & Club. The villas, ranging from one to four bedrooms, are furnished with Jacuzzi bathtub for two and separate shower, mini-bar and microwave, ice maker, personal mobile phone for calling villa concierge and broadband internet (wireless at the pool).

Villa guests enjoy exclusive access to the AAA 4-Diamond rated Bamboo Restaurant and its Mediterranean fusion menu. Six other available Punta Cana resort restaurants specialize in various cuisines including steak and seafood, easily accessed by golf cart. At lunch, the beach restaurant at beautiful Playa Blanca is not to be missed.

Golfers can play the Tom Fazio designed 18-hole Corales or the d P.B. Dye 27-hole La Cana, both with multiple oceanside holes.  Spa treatments, scuba diving and kite boarding with lessons, tennis, fishing, horseback riding, Segway resort tours, heli-tours and sunset cruises are other ways to fill your day. Punta Cana Village is the place for shopping.

You would expect to pay premium prices at the Tortuga Bay Hotel. You will.  Villa rates, which do not include meals or activities, vary dramatically by season.

Zoetry Agua Punta Cana

The 96 suite AAA Four Diamond rated Zoetry Agua Punta Cana is another of those rare all-inclusives with truly stellar services. It markets an Endless Privileges stay that truly exists.

Guests are greeted whenever they arrive (no required check-in or check-out time) with a bottle of rum and then find a bottle of champagne in their room.

Rooms range from one-bedroom junior to three-bedroom suites with hardwood floors and French doors fronting tropical garden or the water, all with king beds. Room services are impressive: mini-bar refreshed twice daily with premium beverages and deli snacks, maid service three times daily, fresh fruit basket daily, 24-hour room service , 24-hour laundry service, unlimited worldwide phone calls  and wireless internet.

Although guest rooms may be smoke-free, the three a-la-carte restaurants (with casual elegance dress code) and bars allow smoking in designated areas. Ironic for a resort emphasizing organic selections and “exceptional nutrition?”

Restaurant Olena features  European and international cuisine plus an international wine cellar; Indigo has international fare; and Amaya serves traditional Dominican and international cuisine.

Included activities are a 20-minute spa treatment per stay, daily afternoon tea, indoor and outdoor pools, fitness center and tennis courts. Aqua also offers “creative come-alongs” for guests to take part in photo and video safaris as well as classes in dance, cooking, rum and cocktail tasting, cigar rolling and wine appreciation, some at extra charge.

Zoetry Agua is located far north of the rest of Punta Cana on Playa Uvero Alto, just like the Sivory, but has a lot more happening for non-honeymooners.

Sanctuary Cap Cana

The 176-room Sanctuary Cap Cana is known for its stone facade exterior and large colonial-style interiors that instantly mark it as Dominican. It boasts large, spacious rooms, the beautiful sands of Playa Juanillo, the Caribbean’s largest marina and renowned Punta Espada 18-hole golf course, which Golfweek calls the Caribbean’s best.

Yet the resort struggles to find a saleable identity. Mostly recently branded as a Sanctuary, Cap Cana caters to families but also has an adults-only wing, ironically called The Fortress. Hotel rooms come in 10 categories, ranging from junior suites to villas and giant suites of up to 5,500 sq. feet; price will help determine your selection.

Every room features rich wood decor, king or double bed, marble bath with shower and tub, room sofa and internet connection. Concierge and room services are on-call 24 hours.

For dining, guests choose either an all-inclusive or EP (continental breakfast only) program for the five restaurants specializing in seafood, steaks, Asian, Italian and international cuisine. The Blue Marlin seafood restaurant is considered one of Punta Cana’s finest. Resort bars and clubs provide the evening entertainment, differing from quiet cocktail sipping to live music merengue dancing.

In daytime, the five resort pools, chartered fishing at the marina, spa treatments (very pricey) or beach watersports at Playa Juanillo. If that’s too limiting, the hotel concierge has a list of guided excursions.

Avid golfers will likely concentrate on the challenging par 72 Jack Nicklaus Punta Espada course. Overall, Sanctuary Cap Cana is probably best suited for couples and honeymooners or families with very young children.
