What the guidebooks often leave out | ||||
Plane flights are notoriously late. It's just as easy to move around the country by express air-conditioned buses. The Helman Alas bus fleet has seats as comfortable as your favorite overstuffed chair. TV monitors play feature movies in English with Spanish subtitles, which makes everyone happy. The buses run non-stop between 4 destinations: Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba and Copan Ruinas. For rates and schedules, call the main office in San Pedro Sula at 504/553-1361. What to avoidAvoid the sand flies on the Bay Islands. Locals warn that only repellents with DEET are effective. The sand flies are at their most ferocious early and late in the day. Avoid visiting the coast in March and April when slash and burning by farmers creates considerable air pollution. Avoid forgetting a rain jacket. Frequent showers keep the landscape green. Avoid spending all your time on the Bay Islands instead of the mainland. There's so much more to do and see on the mainland. |
