The Sugar
Train brings traffic
to a stop everywhere. The gates are manned, literally, at the
handful of places where the tracks cross the main island highway.
And everyone
stays
well back out of habit: The
tracks are still used for about six months of each year for hauling cane and stalks sometimes fly
off and hit pedestrians and vehicles.
The cane
cutting season runs from about January/February to June/July.
