Mountains
and bright green fields of sugar cane become
the standard view on the left, inland, side of the train after the first
few miles. It quickly becomes apparent just how rich, fertile and still
largely unpopulated St. Kitts is.
Almost
half the island's population lives in the capital city of Basseterre.
Young people leave the countryside to work in the city since that's the
main place to find employment. That's Mt. Liamuiga in the background. A better view comes up later.
