Jamaica
Catherine's Peak

Time: 1.5 hours roundtrip from Newcastle . Difficulty: 2-3. Trailhead: Turn left at the end of the Fairy Glades Trail or start at the Old Stables Inn.

This hike was named for Catherine Long who climbed the 5060-foot peak in 1760, the first woman known to have scaled it. She had a much tougher time of it back then because today you will walk a concrete road to the top.

It's a steep grade, with lots of tree ferns and rose apple trees along the road. It's often misty here but you'll enjoy a good view of Kingston if it clears.
